After experiencing an unprecedented decline in 2022, China’s gas demand and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports were among the primary factors to watch in 2023, given the country’s ability to influence the balance of the global market. With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic receding, China was able to restore demand growth in 2023. However, a modest year-on-year growth of 6.9% was below market expectations. Last year was likely a turning point for China's gas sector as we saw its transition to a new pattern, with moderated growth likely to be a new normal and in line with the expected pace of China’s economic recovery.
