Origins of biofuels brings sustainability challenges and opportunities

Europe’s bioenergy future relies on overcoming supply chain and sustainability challenges while capitalizing on policy-driven opportunities like the Renewable Energy Directive III and European Deforestation Regulation. Advanced biofuels, such as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels, are critical for meeting climate targets, but feedstock constraints and policy risks remain obstacles. Additionally, while biogas and biomethane are integral to Europe’s energy transition, reaching ambitious targets like 35 Bcm of biomethane by 2030 will require significant policy support, investment and innovation.
